Difference Between ABN and TFN

Question

Do you have an ABN and a TFN? Are they the same thing? If so, why do I need them both? Do you have an ABN or a TFN and wonder what the difference is between them? In this blog post I’ll explain what each one does in simple terms.

An ABN (Australian Business Number) is a unique business identifier number issued by the Australian Taxation Office.

An ABN (Australian Business Number) is a unique business identifier number issued by the Australian Taxation Office.

It is used to identify business entities and report income tax, file GST returns and register for GST.

A TFN (Tax File Number) is a unique number given to an individual by the Australian Tax Office, it is a 9 digit number and you can’t change it, but you can ask for a new one if you are no longer using your existing one.

The ABN (Australian Business Number) is another type of identification that businesses are required to have and use when operating in Australia or with other businesses within Australia.

If you have an ABN, you don’t need to have a TFN.

If you have an ABN, you don’t need to have a TFN. But if you have a TFN, then it’s highly likely that your employer has provided one for their business as well.

However, it is possible to have both an ABN and a TFN at the same time (and many people do). You can have both an ABN and a TFN, but if you do have one, it must be on all of your tax returns.

If you want both numbers for any reason, then that’s fine and dandy. You just need to make sure that the ABN is used when claiming deductions or other credits associated with small business owners. If not, then use your TFN instead because they’ll save more money in taxes than any other type of deduction or credit could ever hope to do!

You can’t change your TFN though–if someone already has one set up in their name (like me), there’s nothing we can do about it besides ask for another one if we no longer need our existing number anymore–which isn’t always possible either depending on how long ago this happened/what kind of relationship existed between us before hand etcetera…

Takeaway:

So, what can you take away from this information?

  • You can’t have one without the other. If you have an ABN, you don’t need a TFN; and vice versa.
  • Your ABN is permanent, unless it’s cancelled by the ATO (Australian Taxation Office). However, if your business changes its name or structure and this requires a new ABN number to be issued then it will be cancelled automatically when the new one comes through.
  • If you have both an ABN and TFN then they must appear on all of your tax returns as required by law!

In conclusion, an ABN and TFN are very different. The ABN is a unique identifier number given by the Australian Taxation Office that allows you to operate as a business in Australia. Meanwhile, the TFN is a 9 digit number given to individuals by the ATO which can be used for tax purposes or other government services such as Medicare levy payments etc. If you have an ABN then it doesn’t mean that you need one too but both numbers will appear on all of your tax returns anyway because they need this information from individuals who are earning income from various sources such as salary payments etcetera.
