Auxiliary vs Ancillary – What’s the difference?

Auxiliary

An auxiliary verb is a helping verb that can be used to modify the main verb in a sentence. The auxiliary verbs “be”, “have” and “do” are used to add meaning to sentences, such as when you want to indicate who did something or if something happened. For example:

• They have eaten lunch already today!

The word “auxiliary” refers to its ability as an additional part of speech (i.e., it helps another part of speech). In this case, this means that it does not carry any meaning on its own but rather adds extra information onto another word in order for us understand what’s happening in our minds when we read or hear those words together in context with one another (this is why we call them “modifiers”).

Ancillary

Ancillary services are secondary or subordinate functions. They’re provided by a separate organization, and they’re not required by the government or school. For example, ancillary health care services are offered by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as hospitals and clinics.

Ancillary services are typically purchased separately from primary education institutions because they don’t fall under compulsory requirements for students’ learning experiences–such as textbooks or classroom space–but rather serve to supplement them.
